There’s an old saying we have in surfing: never leave waves to find waves.

That means you shouldn’t put in a bunch of effort to get to a new spot when the spot in front of you looks just fine. In Aritz Aranburu’s case, the spot in front of him very regularly looks just fine.

He grew up in a special place — the Basque coast of Spain — and has a deep variety of great local waves to choose from. Aritz is a well-traveled man. He knows the joy of experiencing a new wave in a foreign place, and as a result has gotten comfortable with many of the world’s best waves.

But he also knows that, sometimes, there really is no place like home.
