Surfers, tourists and locals joined with Quiksilver legends on the 30th and 31st July for The Big Bali Eco weekend 2016. With the event now in it’s 9th year, BBEW has helped to raise awareness, provide education and keep the 9.7km shoreline across 5 of Bali’s most popular beaches clean year round. The program enables and inspires local communities to take care of the environment, as well as tourists and surfers wanting to use this beautiful part of the world.

Although the cleaning program is an ongoing infrastructure that has been put in place by Quiksilver in partnership with Coca Cola, The Big Bali Eco Weekend is a great way to celebrate and communicate the initiative to the wider public.

Over the weekend, all sorts of stuff went down between a ROXY fitness event, kids beach soccer, Padma Surf Challenge, lifeguard race and who could forget the sea turtle release!

Since 2007, we have collected more than 31 million kilograms of rubbish and safely released over 130,000 baby sea turtles back into their natural habitat.

One of the highlights of the weekend, every year has to be the Uluwatu Challenge, 54 lucky surfers get to enjoy one of Bali’s most privileged point breaks - surfing the famous ‘Ulus’ with only 4 guys out! All in the name of raising money for environmental and beach clean-up programs in Bali.

Blessed with 4-6 foot Uluwatu, offshore winds, and the sun out- everyone watched as tube after tube went down, rifling through the race track section of the wave. Anyone smart enough to realise the $200 entry fee was a bargain when it meant you had the iconic peeling lefts to share between you and Quiksilver legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Matt Hoy, Peter McCabe or Simon Anderson.

The event did not disappoint - and was a great way to sum up an amazing weekend which is really doing an incredible job to make a lasting impact on some of the most beautiful coastline in the world.
