Format and Judging of The Eddie

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau is the world's most prestigious big wave invitational surf contest held at Waimea Bay on Oahu, Hawaii. The waiting period for the tournament is three months long, kicking off on the 1st of December and closing end of February which pretty much covers the North Shore's biggest swell period of the surf year.

The best big wave surfers in the world are on alert to jump on the next available plane, with no more than 12 hours notice, should an Eddie swell appear on the charts. With the minimum size required being 20 feet (6.1m), despite many close calls, the last time the event was able to run was in 2009 where Greg Long was crowned champion.

Each year the official opening ceremony, held on the first Thursday of December, marks the start of the waiting period with the 28 invited surfers receiving the blessing of Eddie Aikau. If mother nature delivers the necessary swell and surf conditions, the participants will compete in two rounds each with a maximum wave count of 8 waves. The best four waves ridden by each surfer will be scored with a maximum individual wave score of 100 points based on size, risk and how well the wave was surfed.
