SURFGROMS POWER INTO ITS SECOND YEAR

SurfGroms take part in a surfing lesson at Currumbin on the Gold Coast

The world’s first national junior participation surfing program VEGEMITE SurfGroms is poised to take over Australian beaches for a second year.

VEGEMITE SurfGroms offers youngsters aged 5-12 years old an opportunity to learn to surf while developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives, that they will enjoy and embrace for a lifetime.

Since its launch in October last year, more than 8000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time through VEGEMITE SurfGroms.

The second year of the program was launched nationally today at Currumbin on the Gold Coast with the help of sports stars Karmichael Hunt and Nathan Bock from the Gold Coast Suns, former dual rugby league and union international Mat Rogers, four-time surfing World Champion Mark Richards and former surfing World Tour competitor Matt Hoy.

Australian beaches are now preparing for another onslaught with registrations open, just in time for the September school holidays.

VEGEMITE SurfGroms programs are available through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network with more than 80 delivery centres around the country. Parents can register their children through the website – surfgroms.com – which will provide contact details for their closest delivery centre.

“VEGEMITE SurfGroms has been an amazing success story in Australian sport,” said Surfing Australia Chief Executive Officer Andrew Stark.

“To achieve 8000 participants and welcome such prestigious partners in the first year of the program was an outstanding result we are all very proud of.

“We very much look forward to the day a VEGEMITE SurfGrom holds up the World Championship trophy.”

VEGEMITE SurfGroms is also backed by major support sponsor Quiksilver and every child signing up will receive a great Quiksilver backpack bursting with surfing merchandise including a QUIKSILVER rash vest, hat, water bottle and logbook, plus two WAHU beach products and a tube of VEGEMITE Spread.

“Quiksilver proudly supports VEGEMITE SurfGroms,” said Quiksilver APAC President Greg Healy. “We are excited to build upon the program’s first year success and to see even more stoked VEGEMITE SURFGROMS learning to surf this year.”

Surfing Australia is also proud to have the support of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) in developing the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program.

“In its first year VEGEMITE SurfGroms has attracted 8,000 new participants to the sport of surfing. The ASC’s major participation goals are to get more Australians active and involved in sport and support national sporting organisations to plan, implement and monitor the success of their programs.

“In our society where sedentary behaviour is becoming common and there are so many lifestyle barriers to people getting regularly involved in sport, it is exciting to see a fresh new program that attracts both parents and kids. Surfing Australia and its delivery agencies, the surf schools, should be proud of what they have achieved in a relatively small amount of time.”
