The Eddie Opening Ceremony 16|17

The opening ceremony for the Quiksilver In Memory Of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is one of surfing’s grandest gatherings. The best big wave riders in the world all converge at Waimea Bay. They come with boards, they come with respect, and they take part in native ceremonies there in the sacred sand. Eventually, they paddle out and form a prayer circle in the lineup — silhouettes of superheroes shadow off into sea as the sun melts into the Pacific. It really is something.

In spite of every forecaster and model being in concurrence that this was going to be an epic day, the system changed dramatically during the late evening hours leaving us with much less and later arrival of swell than anticipated. In light of that, organizers deemed that today's conditions did not measure up to a true Eddie day. We expect the best we will see today will be 15-18 foot surf mid-afternoon, and not enough lingering energy into tomorrow to give us a second chance.

The Eddie: Clyde Aikau Interview

Clyde Aikau, younger brother of Eddie Aikau, first rode Waimea Bay in 1969. Today, at 66 years of age, he remains one of the most psyched big wave riders on the planet. His voice is excited and as energized as a frothing teenager as he talks about his preparations. If the Bay calls the day, expect him to be ready to lead the charge of those invited to ride in his brother’s name. We caught up with him between training sessions and surfs at the Bay.

The Eddie: A Lot Can Change in 7 Years

The human body is capable of undergoing massive transformations in that span of time. Revolutions can arise. Empires can fall. Trends can come, and trends can most certainly go. But one thing that cannot change in seven years — or any amount of time, for that matter — is the spirit of The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest.

The Eddie is GO

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau will GO this Wednesday, February 10, at Waimea Bay. Organizers gave the event the green light early this-morning after consulting the latest round of forecasting models. This will be the 9th "Eddie" in 31 years. The event was last held in December of 2009, and was won by California's Greg Long.

Organizers anticipate a solid day of surf that will meet the event's strict wave face height requirement of 40 feet, with favorable light winds in the morning, turning light trades by afternoon.

"It has taken us six years to pull the trigger, but this is the first swell we have seen that is truly lining up as an Eddie swell," said Event Director Glen Moncata.

Moncata and the organizing team continue to confer with event patriarch George Downing, who has made the call on every event since its inception.

"As George has famously said, 'The Bay Calls the Day' and that will be Wednesday," added Moncata.

There will be various platforms on which to view the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau:

31st Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Opening Ceremony

There’s a certain heaviness to the water here. Not that it physically feels any thicker than the combination of two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen and a pinch of salt found anywhere else in the world — it just has a different energy. Something about this water feels sacred. And once you dip in, you can’t help but engage with it and respect it.

For those who don't know, the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is a one-day big wave riding event with strict wave height requirements; it will only take place when waves meet or exceed the Hawaiian 20-foot minimum (wave face heights of approximately 40 feet). This was the threshold at which Eddie enjoyed to ride the Bay. The event has a three-month holding period that will begin December 1, 2015, and run through February 29, 2016.
